The Champion
A small preface: I have written poetry on rare occasion. I was about to delete this from Facebook when it dawned on me to share it with you. Good or bad, it tells the story of David and Goliath. The champion declared Who will defeat me? You have no one big enough, Even your God can’t touch me. The people cowered Who will save us? We have no one big enough, Has God given us up? The king feared What have I gotten into? This champion is too big, Even I am scared. The shepherd boy had courage Who is this champion? How dare he defy the armies I will [...]
Putting on the Ritz
I have travelled and slept in some different places. The floor in a pastor’s home in Bermuda, in a mud hut in Kisii, Kenya, in a discount hotel in Seoul, the VIA rail train between Miramichi and Montreal, my car while on the road, to name a few. I’m still amazed when I travel and because of my employment that I am able to stay at the Ritz-Carlton. I have been making reservations for Marriott and its branded hotels for almost 6 years now. In this time, I have been able to stay at Marriott hotels, Courtyard hotels, Renaissance hotels, Residence Inn, Springhill Suites, Towneplace Suites and certainly not the [...]
Road Trip!!!
Loving Toronto I don’t know why everyone hates Toronto, because I simply love it. The city that is, not the hockey team. It is a world-class city, reflecting the many nationalities of the world. It is home to TIFF, Toronto International Film Festival. It is home to 4 pro sports teams, hockey, baseball, soccer and football. For many it is the centre of the universe. This weekend it is the centre of the universe for the Canadian New Democratic Party (NDP). This is the weekend the NDP selects a new leader, following the passing of Jack Layton last summer. God rest his soul and we carry his legacy forward. Watch [...]
Why #KONY2012 matters!!
The awareness campaign by the organization, Invisible Children, known as KONY 2012, has been everywhere. Celebrities tweeting about it, ordinary joes and janes discussing the merits of the viral video associated to the campaign. If you have been in a bubble, avoiding the media, search it out to see what I mean. I am not here to argue about the video. In fact, I haven’t seen and probably won’t. The reason I’m not watching the video is that I have been aware of Joseph Kony and his despicable organization, the Lord’s Resistance Army since the mid 1990s when I lived in Kenya, having also visited southern Uganda during that year [...]
#oneword2012 Rock like faith
He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. Psalm 62.6
Introverts
I’ve always known that I’m an introvert. I definitely wasn’t the outgoing personality. I’ve acted the part of being the shy, quiet, reserved person in the corner. When I started looking at personality type and completed the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator at this site, I’ve keep going back periodically. Every time I answer the questions I come up with the same type: INTJ: Introverted, Intuitive, Thinking, Judging, with very heavy emphasis on the introverted. And the more I tried the test, and read about introversion, it finally dawned on me that being an introvert is not the same as being shy. the other dawning realization that settled on me is that [...]
keeping the faith #oneword365
Faith is hard to maintain at times. I think of Abraham at 98 years, still waiting for the promised son that would come. How long did Abraham have to wait from the time the promise was given? We don’t know. Scripture says “By faith he received power of procreation, even though he was too old—and Sarah herself was barren—because he considered him faithful who had promised” (Hebrews 11:11, for those who want to look up the reference in context). What do you do to maintain faith?
Music
I’ve been listening to a new album recently downloaded, Homemade Worship by Handmade People. The artist is Rend Collective Experiment, from Ireland. Thanks goes to my friend, Keri from Pop Parables for the introduction to this marvelous musical experience (and Keri, they have included a recording of You Are My Vision). The video is the song Second Chance. Here are the lyrics to the song, The Cost, one of my favourite songs from the album: I’m saying yes to You And no to my desires I’ll leave myself behind And follow You I’ll walk the narrow road ’cause it leads me to You I’ll fall but grace Will pick me [...]
Child Sponsorship
The Justice Journey is about ways you can do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with your God. The motto is taken straight from the prophet Micah from the Hebrew Scriptures, what Christians call the Old Testament. Today I am going talk about children in poverty. Really now? Why children in poverty? Well, poverty afflicts the majority of our world. And I am part of the rich Western world. I haven’t understood poverty serving the homeless in Fredericton. I haven’t understood poverty like the children who are part of Compassion International’s sponsorship program. I have seen poverty and wish I could do more to alleviate the poverty in this world. Meet [...]
Teamwork
I am a member of the New Brunswick New Democratic Party. I have been a candidate for the party in the last two provincial elections for the riding of Miramichi Centre. With little organization and no team, I received approximately 3 per cent of the votes cast in 2006. With some support from Provincial Office, some personal activity, but still no team, I received approximately 6 per cent of the vote in 2010. I learned a lot about the process of campaigns and have decided that I need a team of dedicated volunteers to support any future candidacy I may consider. To this end I have become active in the [...]
Snow & Sneakers
In case you didn’t know before today, I thought I would inform you that snow and sneakers don’t mix. Today was a snow day for southern New Brunswick, at least in Fredericton. I haven’t searched the media to find out the breadth of the storm. Today I went to work wearing sneakers. I left my tuque and the one glove I could find home. I didn’t anticipate the flurries amounting to much. Stupid me!! I certainly would have failed as a weather forecaster today. But I also wasn’t watching the forecast from those who study and broadcast such things. I was most decidedly unprepared for the inclement weather. And another [...]
Faith – #OneWord365 Update
This year my New Year’s resolution has been simple. I chose faith as my One Word for 2012. Choosing a word for the year is a lot like buying a car. Sometimes it chooses you, sometimes you choose it. But always it defines you. You see your model car everywhere you go, whereas before you bought it, you never saw it. The same with faith. It chose me this year and certainly defines me in ways I never imagined. During services, I am more closely attuned to the scriptures that mention faith, whether being read by a reader or preached about by the preacher. Even when I’m thinking about something else, the [...]
Welcome
This is a new start for me. I will be continuing my blogs, The Justice Journey and Han Kyoul’s Musings, as sub-sections of this blog. I want my blog brand to identify myself as an writer and photographer. I will be striving to use my own photography as much as I can. If there is no credit on the photo, then it can usually be assumed it is credited to Doug Mullin. I hope to achieve success in blogging regularly. And to provide insightful information regarding the worlds of politics, photography, non-profit (charitable) organizations, issues of justice and occasionally my personal life. Commenting on my posts is encouraged. I will [...]
