Job Search

This is a quick reflection of my notes taken during a presentation of an employment counsellor to a group of my colleagues. I have not edited my thoughts to reflect formal writing and structure. So please excuse the brief sentences and incomplete thoughts.

Tap into the hidden job market

only as little as 10% of jobs are posted online. you need to access your network. it is said a person knows 200 people, they know 200 people. so talk to the people you know, they might know somebody.

Changing jobs

use resume and cover letter to showcase transferrable skills. don’t simply hand out the same resume to each and every employer. tailor the resume to each job applied. maintain a skeleton resume of everything you’ve ever done, job, volunteer work, courses taken, accomplishments, anything that helps you showcase your transferable skills.

Research

PSETL has resources to help, use the online tools available, friends and contacts, read the newspaper daily.

Overall the lesson to be learned in the job search is that a proactive approach is needed. You make the opportunity and the best of what is out there.
