This post is the first in a new series I am calling People in My Neighbourhood. I will be highlighting people I know personally or are within my circles of friends, people that are accomplishing great things with a mindset to making New Brunswick an even better place.
“Yup, I used to have a very good salary. I was lucky, but this work is more important than my bottom line.” This was Dominic Cardy’s tweet on in response to a regional director of the New Brunswick Liberals.
I am happy to know and work with Dominic in the New Democratic Party. A man who sacrifices a good salary because he believes in the value of his work is a man worth following to the ends of the earth. I don’t think that will be literally necessary, but at least within the borders of New Brunswick.
With a fixed election date of September 22, 2014, all parties have a deadline looming. The great challenge is preparation. Forty-nine ridings must be organized to recruit candidates. Fundraising support is a critical part of this preparation. It enables candidates to create materials and events that present their unique vision of the province for all New Brunswickers. Encouraging people to be engaged in the process will be a challenge worth taking up.
This is the task for which Dominic has sacrificed financial compensation. Dominic is a smart person who believes in making New Brunswick fair and equitable for all. This will mean tackling the scourge of illiteracy, the devastation of poverty and a sagging job market (a gross understatement, I know).
Dominic has international work experience in building the democracies of developing nations. He has worked in Cambodia and Nepal, assisting political parties in their development. He is married to a wonderful woman, Margot, a dynamo and phenomenal activist in her own right.
He has chosen to represent his riding of residence, Fredericton West-Hanwell, in the NB Legislature. This interesting choice is a mix of urban and rural with the aboriginal community of Kingsclear First Nation in the riding. And this is the riding where I currently live. I look forward to being involved in the campaign to elect Dominic as MLA for Fredericton West-Hanwell.
