Sliding pieces, one-by-one

Moving is like a puzzle. You know the puzzle I’m thinking of. The one that is a square and you slide the pieces around one-by-one, because there is only one space open.

With a move, first you round up some labour. You know you have good friends when they agree to help without expectation of anything in return. But that said, I’d turn and help them, when they ask. Second, you recruit a friend with a truck to take care of the big stuff. Third, you pick a time, and hope against hope that the forecast doesn’t call for rain.

You then have to decide what needs to be moved first. I chose my bed frame, before the mattress. I had a friend, mechanically inclined, deconstruct the bed and reassemble the frame in the new location. All this in time for the mattress and box-spring to arrive. It worked according to plan. Brilliant!!!

Shifting the pieces around one-by-one to make them fit in the vehicles is one thing. Fitting everything into the new room is another. Yeah, I’m renting a room in a house. All I needed was bedroom furniture and the like.

Once everything is in the room, the crazy puzzle begins. Shifting pieces, one-by-one, from one temporary spot to another. Deconstructing your material life and trying to reassemble some semblance of order. One box gets moved three or four times at a minimum.

Finally, progress. You see space in the middle of the room. But still, lots more to do. More shifting, pieces one-by-one, but you know you can do it. You’ve already made progress. Tomorrow will bring more.
