Today, I got my first tattoo on my right forearm. It says Choose Joy.
A little back story. A few years ago, I had come across the Henri Nouwen quote “Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day.” It resonated with me.
Around the same time, my friend Alece shared about her friend dealing with a chronic illness that was very painful to deal with. Her friend had the motto Choose Joy. After her friend died, as a memory for her friend, Alece had her friend’s handwriting tattooed with the words Choose Joy. She shared about this on her blog and her readers did the same. Now I’m one of those readers, though a few years later than most.
For me, it was the universe conspiring to teach me lesson. Finding Nouwen and hearing Alece share her friend’s story resonates for me. My Dad is living with Alzheimer’s, and I had both my grandmothers live and die from the same. Having a visible reminder to Choose Joy is what I’m striving for.
And the beauty of the universe is that the tattoo shop is called Madd Hatter Ink, newly opened in my city. My idea for ink came from Alece and Madd Hatter Ink is making it come to life.
Thanks Alece Ronzino and Tim Pellerin for the idea and completion of the idea.
