#kentndp by-election in Kent recap #nbpoli

The Kent by-election to replace Shawn Graham as Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) took place this past Monday (April 15). The final results: I took time to be part of the NDP campaign. I was able to go to the nomination meeting where Susan Levi-Peters was acclaimed as the candidate. This took place in Bouctouche on March 23. Dominic Cardy spoke, giving his support to Susan. Susan accepted the nomination. The media spoke to Susan and Dominic. The campaign was on. And I also went down to Kent to assist in the final days of the election. I had an off-road experience on the back roads of Kent County, [...]

#kentndp Kent County is beautiful

I love the chance to visit and see the wonders of New Brunswick. So to experience Kent County as a volunteer for the Kent NDP campaign to elect Susan Levi-Peters as MLA was an opportunity I did not want to miss. It is a reasonable facsimile to heading to Montreal for the federal NDP convention. Election day is Monday April 15, so e-day minus 3. Rural New Brunswick is amazingly beautiful, even in the onset of early spring. The snow is almost all gone, the mud is starting to develop, only to wait for the April showers. The only rule is not to travel down a dirt road. Rule broken [...]

Crowdfunding #getfrank

from my blog Black-Capped, you will find the following post published today, March 13. Black-Capped is a blog about New Brunswick. The apocalypse may have just happened. For anyone that has known me, I have been a strong supporter of the NDP over the last decade. Before that, I identified with religious conservatives, more from the fact of proximity and the way I thought my religious inclinations fell. (That change in politics is a story for another time and place). Needless to say, Frank McKenna, former Liberal Premier, was never part of the group of politicians I’ve aspired to meet. That has changed. I want to go to an event [...]

living on $537 #nbpoli

“Je demande à tous les ministres si eux autres seraient capables de vivre avec 537$ par mois, et je voudrais bien qu’ils essaient ça” Gaetane Richard This is a quote from a news story posted on the Radio-Canada website, accessed here. Translated “I ask all ministers if they could live on $537 and I would like them to try.” I’ve chosen to leave the quote in French because that is the language of the person speaking and the language of the story. The basic gist of the story is a lady on social assistance, who was told that donations of food would count against her check, which maxes out at $537 [...]

Affordable Housing Reception

Affordable Housing Reception

Yesterday, there was a reception at City Hall, hosted by Mike O’Brien. This reception was to highlight the issue of affordable housing. In total, there were approximately 125 people there to mingle and hear brief presentations from Francine DiMambro, from the CMHC, Fredericton Mayor Brad Woodside, Fredericton Fort Nashwaak MLA Pam Lynch and Tim Ross, coordinator of the Community Action Group on Homelessness (CAGH). Mike O’Brien is City Councillor for Ward 3 and chair of the Affordable Housing Committee. This event was held in connection to Affordable Housing Week, but made even more poignant by the Carleton St fire this past Thanksgiving that saw the Isaac’s Way building being completely [...]

Half the Sky #halfthesky

Half the Sky #halfthesky

My troubles in having a job eliminated and having to finding a new job pale in comparison to troubles encountered by the girls and women of the world. I just watched the first episode of Half the Sky on PBS (click here). It was inspired by Nick Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn who wrote the book Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide. The documentary series continues the book’s argument that fighting the oppression of women is the moral challenge of the 21st Century. Read the Women’s Crusade if you want a taste of the story. The essay is adapted from Kristof and WuDunn’s book. Though working in [...]

Election Postscript #RHAB6

Election Postscript #RHAB6

It has been one week since election day here in New Brunswick. I am happy with the results. The campaign team I was part of was able to claim success. Victory! Greg Ericson is Councillor-Elect for Ward 8 in Fredericton. Mayor Woodside is still mayor. Matt Hayes gave a good campaign and brought lots of ideas to the table, but in the end, Fredericton proved happy to re-elect the Brad to a record eighth term as mayor of this great city. My campaign ended somewhat as expected. I placed second to last place, taking 704 votes. I had no expectation or any indication of how good/bad I might do in [...]

Now that I have given you the information and links to my fellow candidates, I feel it important to raise your awareness of the position we are seeking election and to give you a reason to vote for me, Douglas Mullin. The Department of Health website from the Government of New Brunswick answers F.A.Q about the Regional Health Authority election. I’ll include the most relevant and if you want to view the entire list it can be accessed here: http://www.gnb.ca/0051/0053/rha_election-faq-e.asp What services do health authorities provide? Family Doctor

I am Doug Mullin, running to be elected Board Member for the Regional Health Authority  Subsection B6. The geography of this section encompasses Fredericton to Doaktown, Upper Miramichi to Cambridge Narrows, Stanley to Chipman & Minto, and certainly not least, Oromocto and New Maryland. In my previous post, I stated that I am relatively healthy. To be very truthful, I don’t know that. I have assumed that because I feel well. I am coming to the age in life where I should be consulting a doctor regarding my general health. For example, prostrate cancer is a leading killer, which can be defeated through early detection. The Prostrate Cancer Canada network [...]

Doug Mullin For Regional Health Authority B6

I am Doug Mullin, running for the Regional Health Authority election to represent Subsection B6. If elected, this means I would serve on the Board of Directors for Horizon Health Network. I want to represent your concerns as your Board Member. I am choosing to run because I am a relatively healthy person. I have no medical problems of which I am aware. However, I hear friends and acquiantances complain about problems in our health care system. I want to be a part of the solution. I want our system to be well-managed and accessible to all. My health issues are structural issues, of primary concern: 1. access to family medicine. [...]

Political Lefty

Political Lefty

Hey, did you know that there are people on the political left who are religious? If you didn’t, allow me the pleasure of being the first you meet. I am a self-identified religious political lefty. I am a member of the New Democratic Party. We are social democrats with our party’s roots in the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF). The CCF was active on Canada from the early 1930s until the early 1960s. One of the provincial sections of the CCF became the party of government in 1944. If you research this, you’ll find the CCF in Wikipedia listed with a political ideology of democratic socialism. To quote Wikipedia regarding Saskatchewan [...]

Road Trip!!!

Road Trip!!!

Loving Toronto  I don’t know why everyone hates Toronto, because I simply love it. The city that is, not the hockey team. It is a world-class city, reflecting the many nationalities of the world. It is home to TIFF, Toronto International Film Festival. It is home to 4 pro sports teams, hockey, baseball, soccer and football. For many it is the centre of the universe. This weekend it is the centre of the universe for the Canadian New Democratic Party (NDP). This is the weekend the NDP selects a new leader, following the passing of Jack Layton last summer. God rest his soul and we carry his legacy forward. Watch [...]

Teamwork

Teamwork

I am a member of the New Brunswick New Democratic Party. I have been a candidate for the party in the last two provincial elections for the riding of Miramichi Centre. With little organization and no team, I received approximately 3 per cent of the votes cast in 2006. With some support from Provincial Office, some personal activity, but still no team, I received approximately 6 per cent of the vote in 2010. I learned a lot about the process of campaigns and have decided that I need a team of dedicated volunteers to support any future candidacy I may consider. To this end I have become active in the [...]
